During the late 16th century and the 17th century, Hyderabad's power and fame increased as it became a famous place for diamond trade.
Hyderabad's fame caught the attention of the mughal prince, Aurangzeb. He had spent most of his time establishing deccan and reinforcing the mughal superiority and sovereignty. When Shah Jahan died in 1666, Aurangzeb made his power stronger by becoming emperor and he spent most of the powers trying to expand beyond Akbar. Aurangzeb mainly targeted Hyderabad to rule. Aurangzeb's attacks were failures initially and so had to leave due to frustration. However ,he was back and attacked for nine months in 1687 ,when Golconda finally fell. Golconda became part of 'six mughal provinces' in the deccan. Mahabat Khan ,the commander of golconda army joined the mughal camp from Qutb Shah's. He was appointed as governor of Golconda and Hyderabad state by Aurangzeb . Though Aurangzeb tried to keep his importance ,the city started to lose his importance. The capital of the new province was shifted from Hyderabad to Aurangabad, which became the new head quaters of mughals in deccan. In 1713,the mughal emperor, Furraksiyar, appointed Qamaraddun as the new governor of deccan. He was proved to be an able administrator and earned the title of Nizam-ul-mulk or governor of kingdom.
The city soon started to get worse. Soon Hyderabad's importance decreased and its diamond trade was destroyed, and the city fell in ruins.
In 1763, Hyderabad regained its glory, when Nizam Ali Khan moved the capital from Aurangabad to Hyderabad .Nizam Ali Khan ruled under the title of asaf jah. Asaf Jah declared himself independent and the dynasty of Nizams was established. The Nizams dynasty was started by Mir Qamaruddin Chin Qilij Khan or Asaf Jah 1. The Nizams ruled on Hyderabad for 7 generations (A.D.1724-1948)establishing it as the largest and foremost muslim princely state in India . During the time they ruled on Hyderabad, Hyderabad had immense growth again , both economically and culturally. The Nizams were counted as among the wealthiest people in the people in the world.
When the British and french rule took hold over most of India, the Nizams eventually won the friendship of the western invaders ,without giving up their powers. As a result ,Nizams continued to rule over Hyderabad and Hyderabad became the largest princely state. Hyderabad had its own currency, railways and post systems. When India got its independence, the Nizams wanted to become independent either by getting dominion status by the British empire or sovereign state. The laws soon brokedown and the order soon followed with fights between supporters of Nizams and supports of Congress. As the violence got uncontrollable, the Indian government initiated a police action called ‘operation polo’.On 16 september 1948,the indian army moved to hyderabadand in 5 days ,the nizams army surrendered. The Nizams signed the instrument of accession and then Hyderabad joined the indian union as a state.
